On 9 July 2018, a workshop was organised to make preparations for public hearings on the implementation of the National Strategy for Regional Development (NSRD) 2016-2020 and on the role of main actors engaged in regional development. The event was attended by representatives of the Parliamentary Committee for Environment and Regional Development; Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MARDE) and of ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ project, implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ.

Radu Mudreac, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Environment and Regional Development: ‘This is a very important event as it serves as a platform for discussions, experience and knowledge exchange. As members of the Parliamentary Committee come from various fields, it useful and efficient for us to take part in this kind of activities and find out more about regional development and environment’.

Dorin Andros, State Secretary, MARDE: ‘It is very important to promote policies which are agreed by all actors in the field of regional development and by those from local public administration. At the same time, we would like to thank GIZ for this initiative to hold a joint dialogue and constructive discussions with the members of the Parliament as we should understand that regional development is not a sector policy, but an inter-sector policy in which all the actors should get engaged’.

Christina Otto, Manager of MLPS project: ‘From 2017, MLPS project provides assistance to the legislative, including to the Parliamentary Committee for Environment and Regional Development. For us, the cooperation with this committee is very important having the objective to develop and promote policy reform proposals leading to the improvement of the regional development sector. Currently the biggest challenge is drafting the new paradigm of regional development, aiming at facilitating the economic development of regions. This is why we highly appreciate these public hearings and consider them important in the establishment of a common approach’.

During the workshop the strategic vision on the integrated waste management system, the regional approach in implementing the National Strategy for Water Supply and Sanitation and the one dealing with the business support infrastructure were presented. Also, in the second part of the workshop, the draft of the new paradigm of regional development with a focus on strengthening the economic development of regions was presented.

The event was organised with the support of the ‘Modernization of Local Public Services in the Republic of Moldova’ project, implemented by the German Development Cooperation through GIZ.
