On 3 December 2014, in Cahul was held the third meeting of the project Working Group for the 3rd waste management zone in South Development Region (SDR).

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, Ministry of Environment, South Regional Development Agency, Rayon councils and representatives of local public authorities in the region and GIZ experts.

The purpose of this meeting was to coordinate the progress of the project conducted during July – December in terms of development of feasibility study and environmental impact assessment. Project activity during this period was focused on determining the basis for the development of possible viable project concepts, focusing on the site selection for regional landfill and transfer stations, analysis of options for waste management system, initiating the development of environmental impact assessment report, especially basic conditions, conducting topographic and hydrogeological investigations of the sites, analysis of institutional options for waste management in the SDR, the 3rd waste management zone.

There were also presented the results of the study visit in Romania, in the period 9 – 14 November 2014, when representatives from this waste management zone visited three similar projects in Arges, Sibiu and Mures counties.

Discussions were focused on initiating and carrying out work on changing land use selected for regional landfill and transfer stations. Thus, it is estimated that the feasibility study will be completed in March next year.

In the South Development Region, SWM Development Strategy was developed in 2011.
